Great shot here Jeff.  I don’t feel I have the skills/authority for a full blown Critique of your shot but I have some feedback for you.

It appears to me you wanted to use focus at a way of identifying your subject.  If this is the case then I would speculate the subject to be the leaves and branch on the left forward, or middle, tree.  Again if this was your goal you accomplished it.  The foreground leaves and branch on the middle tree are spot on in focus and look amazing.  On the composition side I think you did an excellent job of keeping just enough of the roots in frame.  To much more may have shown too much ground and plain dirt, and too much less would have left the eye looking for more.

For improvements I would suggest, if possible, looking for a way to minimize the left tree in the background.  To me it feels like a distraction, most likely because of the high contrast between the dark bark and brighter leaves.  The same goes for the bare branches that come from outside the frame along the middle tree, but those are more a minor personal annoyance.

Another improvement would be tightening up the top because the leaves/branch that come in from the top on the right tree draw attention because of their high contrast as well.  Additionally, these leaves/branches also appear to be in focus which, if using focus as a method for defining your subject (as mentioned above), is confusing when trying to identify the subject.

Overall I think it’s a pretty cool shot.  I really love the amount of detail you were able to retain in the leaves, branches, bark and roots on the middle tree.  Love what you did with this in post as well.  Not sure how you performed the B&W conversion, but the treatment works well with the subject.  Amazing job and keep up the great work.
